Tell Kate Brown to de-deputize Oregon State Police!
When Multnomah District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced that he wouldn't be prosecutingBlack Lives Matter protesters for minor offenses (meaning almost all of them), he took a real stand for the people of Portland and ended the city's plans to drown protesters with misdemeanors.
In response, the US Marshals, with Governor Kate Brown's consent, have deputized all Oregon State Police to make federal charges, meaning any arrests by OSP officers go to federal court, cutting Schmidt out of the loop.
Given that Schmidt was just elected in May with 76% of the vote, it's pretty clear where Portlanders stand on this. And it's pretty clear that our other officials are willing to do an end run around him to keep charging lawful protesters with petty offenses. This is an insult to democracy.
Kate Brown needs to know this is not acceptable. Tell her to stop siding with the Trump administration and to pull the Oregon State Police out of Portland. Send her a message through her website (using the topic "Public Safety") or call her office at (503) 378-4582.
